Dear CBK Member,

I spent 3 days at the Overseer’s cottage on Table Mountain, and found the most beautiful red and blue disa’s. A real treat. It is a great inspiration and something all bonsai growers need to do, considering it is on our doorstep.

We are all taking stain with the water restrictions and I have been going down to the spring to collect water every second day, developing considerable muscle in the process, and have reduced my water bill to R114 for the past month!

I have however found watering by hand has meant I can “individualize” my watering for each tree. I have also placed most of my mames in humidity trays, which has been helping.

The programme for the New Year is nearly ready and will be out before our next meeting.

We will be having an end of the year club function at our workshop on the 4th March at Bishopsford during the normal monthly workshop.

I would like to encourage as many as possible to attend so that we can do some “bonding” especially with all our new members.

The club will supply meat and rolls and I would like members to volunteer to make salads. So when you let me know if you are attending let me know if you are willing to do a salad, I will co-ordinate so that we have a variety of salads. Partners and children are welcome. (Grandchildren as well Milly)

Random Bonsai Tip

To thicken thin branches make a cut just below the branch or a bud on the branch. The sugars produced in the leaves of the tree move down to the roots through the phloem, this flow of sap is interrupted by the cut and the accumulation of sugars above the cut increases the vigour as it is used by the bud, forcing it into action. As soon as the wound heals the normal sap flow resumes.
